GranuFlo® is a dry acid concentrate powder used to neutralize acid buildup in blood during dialysis treatments. It is associated with causing high bicarbonate levels which can potentially cause a patient to suffer a heart attack, cardiac arrest, stroke, low blood pressure, as well as death. Patients who underwent dialysis treatment with Granuflo® were up to six times as likely to experience sudden and potentially fatal heart attack or sudden death within 48 hours of undergoing dialysis. In March 2012, the FDA issued a Class 1 recall of Granuflo® after it received a leaked copy of an internal memo distributed by its manufacturer, Fresenius Medical Care (FMC). The memo revealed FMC’s knowledge of a six fold increased occurrence of cardiac arrest and death with their dialysate mix products, and cautioned the doctors in its own dialysis clinics to carefully calculate the dose of Granuflo® prescribed for treatments, as well warning against using Granuflo® for patients with pre-existing high levels of bicarbonate in their blood. However, the document and its important warning was only sent to the doctors at FMC’s company owned and operated dialysis clinics, leaving thousands of non-FMC owned clinics
