Drug Abuse vs. Pain Management
Drug Abuse vs. Pain Management – Dr. Howard Heit describes how good pain management has been hindered due to increasing use and misuse of opiate medications. Dr. Heit argues that addiction is a medical condition that is separate from pain and that the growth of addiction should not hinder pain management for patients. This clip was excerpted from a talk given at “The New Understanding of Pain” program. The program was put on by the National Press Foundation in collaboration with The America Public Health Association and was supported by PriCara and the NPF Program Fund. If someone is taking opiates long enough there’s a 100% chance that they will become physically dependent. Dependency is not the same as addiction. it’s sad that so many doctors confuse these two. A doctors first priority is to? treat the pain of his/her patients not to be hesitant because of the chance of addiction.
i? have had over 26 surgeries on my legs. my ankles were crushed in a carwreck , now they are fused. i walk like frankenstine. without my pain meds i could not even convience myself to get out of bed in the morning. also with these injuries come other problems with my neck hips and lowerback pains. life would be unbarebly painful without my medicine
Hi, my mom is on the pain med “Salma” She says she needs if for the pain in her leg. She doesn’t want to get surgery cause she said she’s a nurse and wouldn’t be? able to work for like 6 or 7 months. Is this pain med addicting and harmful?? She said shes not addicted to it when I ask her.
