I am currently a college student, and I will be graduating in a year. I am seriously considering moving to Adelaide, and I was wonder if anyone would be able to tell me how difficult–financially and socially it would be to move there from the U.S.. (Thanks!)

moving is not the hard thing….its finding a place that you will be happy….adelaide is a beautiful city….if you have visited it in the past you will know that….but it is a quiet sort of place with not much party life or hustle bustle….
if you want a little more action i would suggest melbourne or sydney
if you like the relaxed kind of life Queensland or Perth can give you that plus fantastic weather to boot…
i dont know why you are looking to move so its hard to give you my real opinion….i live in melbourne and wouldnt want to live in Adelaide..

i’m an international student in Adelaide. So i could tell u a thing or 2.
1. Adelaide is not like US (can be VERY quiet at times).
2. Cost of living (if u have tight purse strings) could be around 1K aud~ my friends can survive at 800 aud.
3. Moving around is relatively ok~ public transport rules (very good i might say), if u live close to the city don’t worry about taking a bus or tram or train. Plus they have a simple system.
4. Working wise i’m not really sure.
5. Socially, err.. people are friendly here.
Financially and socially you should be fine, but if you’re planning to come on a skilled migrant basis, you might need some work experience before you qualify.
Adelaide is incredibly boring. I spent a year there once in a blur of drink and cannabis around 1978, in Hindley Street bars and in North Adelaide Melbourne Street ? I think ? But it is a very miserable place. Go to Melbourne instead.
Adelaide is considered a bit of a joke by Melbourne and Sydney standards because it was once known as the “City of Churches” but the reality is that Adelaide has a fantastic climate, friendly people and lower costs of living.
A lot depends on what you intend doing here – workwise etc. If you have the right attitude and you want excitement it wont be quite as attractive as Sydney but it wont be boring either!
The keys to getting permenant residency status in Australia (anywhere) for a young person are sponsorship , and a job. Google Australia immigration to learn about the types of visas available. You may find another route, but most likely, you will need to have a job. Finding a sponsor is somewhat easier than finding a job, but in either case, the task is best accomplished in Australia, rather than by email or phone or any other means. This translate to mean: Take a vacation. Get an ETA and spend three months in Australia, traveling, making friends, and finding work. Then, apply for the permenant visa when you have your ducks in a row. Look forward to paperwork delays and some frustration. Use a licensed immigration agent or a solicitor to make sure the paperwork is processed in a timely manner.
I have only known one individual who got through this process successfully who found a job and a sponsor through a multinational corporation without a trip to Australia. He and his family were back in the states in 6 months due to culture shock. The vacation is key to knowing if Australia is really for you.
Adelaide. You will read a lot of glowing stories about Adelaide, and you will see the “drug haze” stories, as well. Adelaide has to be the best kept secret in Australia, and, I for one, would ask to keep it that way. There is more to see and do in Adelaide and its surrounding area than anyone can see and do in a lifetime. The people are typical Aussies, fun loving, friendly, and kind. There is, to be certain, a drug problem in Adelaide, as in every major city in the world, but it is not that visible. The night life is more than adequate. There are critics of every city. Traffic can be a problem, but once you learn your way around, it is tolerable. Cost of living in Adelaide is comparable to Wichita, Kansas. Houses are a bit more pricey. It is possible to survive in Adelaide on $ 1000 US a month, but I would not want to do it. You will be comfortable in Adelaide on $ 2500 US a month, and wealthy on $ 5000 US a month. Pay scales in Adelaide appear good overall. Work is generally available in virtually every occupation. It is possible to find less pricey housing in the surrounding area. Visit Melbourne, too. A lot of people seem to like it more than Adelaide. (I do not, but if I had to, I would live there before I would live in Sydney) I find the traffic there to be much more congested, and the people a bit more preoccupied with making a buck. For the most part, the people I have met in Melbourne are less open to stangers than the people in Adelaide. I think, in all fairness, that you need to see Australia as a tourist before you make a commitment to any one location. Sometimes, a job will make it so you have no choice, but if you have a choice, get all the information you can, and visit all potential sites first.

Adelaide is known as a small city and or large country town. It has everything you will ever need, is beautifully designed and the people are like any other over the world, there is good and bad, and its up to you to work out who you want to associate with. It will be what you make of it. The education facilities are excellent, the universitys and colleges, all very assesable and within a resonable budget. The cost of living is significantly lower that Sydney and Melbourne, the beaches are beautiful, the close by wine regions and hills, the natural fauna and flore is to die for. Adelaide is slowly becoming less of a well kept secret and will oneday be the “Go to” place of Australia. Until then we are enjoying the perfect lifestyle, in a perfect climate, with all the best nature intended. I love Adelaide, after living in other cities, I CHOOSE to live here, because I can. Im sure you wont regret it, and seeing as you have an accent, as soon as you open your mouth, people will be intregiued and want to talk to you. Goodluck.

if you are a skilled worker or want to continue educattion its easier..and if you have family in adelaide you could ask them to help u move here…

i think australia is not that expensive~!! wel;l its aorund the same..lucky for u U.s dollar is worth twice as much as aussie dollars~!! u can find cheap housing if u look hard enough~!!
