The Center of Disease Control reports that prescription medications are responsible for more overdose deaths than illegal substances such as cocaine and heroin. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the number of people who find treatment for pain killer abuse increased fourfold in the span of a decade (1998 – 2008). The number of emergency room visits related to prescription medications also increased 97% in four years (2004 -2008). In 2009, an average of 6,027 individuals a day abused pain relievers for the first time.
